49m² | Performance and closing event with Echo Wang

Echo Wang and Witte Rook are inviting you to Zaartpark on Sunday 20 September at 3.00 pm for a special performance. Echo has been a guest artist with the 49m² project for the past three months. During the residency, Echo created a series of sculptures using materials from the park; conversations with visitors and passers-by became part of the creative process. This afternoon, Echo will present a newly written story, performed in (imperfect) Dutch, and the results of this period of work will be on display.

Echo Wang is a Taiwanese multidisciplinary artist. Their work brings together drag, rituals, ecology and technology. Through installations and performances, Echo explores how landscapes carry stories of migration, memory and colonial history.
Echo has transformed the 49m² space into an altar for the Princess of the Eight Treasures, a Dutch princess who became a deity in Taiwanese folklore. Echo has also grown sweet potatoes — a crop that mirrors the intertwined colonial histories of Taiwan and Europe — whilst contemplating the naturalisation of plants and reflecting on their own naturalisation.

Through its long-term project 49m², Witte Rook offers artists the opportunity, over the course of a season, to deepen their practice and experiment with interventions in public space. To this end, a 7 x 7-metre plot of land in Breda’s Zaartpark has been set aside and is exempt from regulations. The project runs for a total of 20 years, with Echo Wang’s intervention being the final one of the tenth year.
