On Friday 5 September, we kicked off with the very first meeting of Writers Block, Witte Rook’s new programme that encourages the writing talent of art professionals in the field of visual arts. Our participants are Lenny van Gent, Jilles Feij, Gert-Jan van den Bemd, Eva Michiels, Emma Wiersma, Sofie de Jong, Vincent Koevoets, and Rebekka van den Berg, who will be launching this pilot together with Roel Neuraij, Manon van Beek, and Esther van Rosmalen. The programme focuses on a diverse group that meets monthly to strengthen professional knowledge, engage in substantive dialogue, exchange experiences and, above all, inspire each other.

Prior to this, on Friday 4 July, we got to know all the participants, with the state of art criticism being an important part of the conversation during a joint lunch. The reason for this was the article Kritiek in Crisis (Criticism in Crisis) van Laurens Otto (Platform BK) , which analyses the current situation and argues that a healthy and accessible art sector desperately needs art criticism. Writers Block was set up to encourage artists and art professionals with the ambition to write about art, to deepen their knowledge and to make it available to a wider audience. To this end, we will conclude with a public lecture by art historian Joke de Wolf in November. Follow our social media and calendar for dates and location.
