Notes from the artist, by Roeland Rooijakkers
The observation you see here consists of a sequence of fourteen images I captured during my working period. The photographs are numbered from 1 to 14 and reveal the gradual development of the hole I dug – and with it, the dialogue I entered into with the landscape. A landscape that turned out to be surprisingly dynamic.
While I’m content with the final image, the real value for me lies in the stillness and introspection these months have brought. As an unexpected outcome, this project even led me to a new place: a small patch of nature in Almere that I now tend to, collecting material for future work.
I’m curious to see how the next artist at this location will respond to the traces I’ve left behind. For me, this working period was an invitation to slow down – and a true pleasure to be part of.
On the Working Period of Roeland Rooijakkers
What does it mean to begin something without adding or taking anything away?
In the winter of 2025, artist Roeland Rooijakkers worked on 49m2 of land in Zaartpark, Breda. He dug, observed, and let nature set the pace. Writer Roel Neuraij followed his process and engaged in conversation with him about seasons, purity, and the art of doing nothing. In his essay, he takes you along frozen pits, emerging shoots, and philosophical reflections that unfold as slowly and richly as winter itself.
