De Vrijstaat - land van 49m2

You are warmly invited to the opening of the exhibition The Free State – Land of 49m2 on Thursday 29 August at 19:00 at the StadsGalerij in Breda.

Eleven artists – differing in age, discipline and phase of their practice – explore how freedom relates to space, rules and ecology. The title refers to the project 49m2, in which artists spend a season working on a 7×7 metre plot of land in Breda’s Zaartpark, a piece of ground declared free from regulation – a true free state.

Featuring works by Ahn Sung Hwan, Bo Emmens, Britte Koolen, Edward Clydesdale Thomson, Letizia Artioli, Maud van den Beuken, Maurik Stomps, de Onkruidenier, Penelope Cain, Sabina Timmermans and Ursa Prek in collaboration with Gerrit-Jan Smit.

The exhibition runs from 30 August to 30 September 2025. A varied programme of side events will accompany the exhibition – follow us on social media for updates.
