You are warmly invited to the opening of the exhibition De Vrijstaat – land van 49m2 (The Freestate – land of 49m2) on Thursday 29 August at 19:00 at the StadsGalerij in Breda.

Eleven artists – differing in age, discipline and phase of their practice – explore in their work how freedom relates to space, rules and ecology. The title refers to the project 49m2, in which artists spend a season working on a 7 x 7 metres piece of land in Breda’s Zaartpark that is exempt from regulation – or in other word a free state.

Featuring works by Ahn Sung Hwan, Bo Emmens, Britte Koolen, Edward Clydesdale Thomson, Letizia Artioli, Maud van den Beuken, Maurik Stomps, de Onkruidenier, Penelope Cain, Sabina Timmermans and Urša Prek in collaboration with Gerrit-Jan Smit.

The exhibition runs from 30 August to 30 September 2025. A varied programme of side events will accompany the exhibition – follow us on social media for updates.
