From 21 December 2022 to 19 March 2023 Anne Leijdekkers will be the guest artist of the 49 square meters in the Zaartpark in Breda.

“As a visual theatre maker, I have a deep fascination with the relationship between humans and non-humans. Through various approaches and in diverse collaborations, I explore this relationship in an ongoing attempt to understand and experience it on multiple levels, together with an audience – from the positioning of non-human entities to the ways in which we perceive them.

At the moment, I am working extensively with the idea of the mystery of a place. In this era – where recognising non-human agency (melting ice, droughts, to name but a few) is essential for developing new ways of relating to the Earth – the search for a new visual language of ‘the mysterious’ is, in my view, of great importance. Every place, no matter how much we, as humans, attempt to rationalise or peel it back, carries an inherent sense of mystery. Or, in the words of Timothy Morton: ‘Things are exactly what they are, but never what they seem.’”
