49m2 is an experimental art location in the Zaartpark where artists realise temporary interventions without restrictions and investigate the interaction between people, nature and public space.

SUMMER 2025 WITH MAUD VAN BEUKEN AS OUR guest ARTIST IN ZAARTPARK, BREDA

Maud van den Beuken (NL/DE) explores the speculative space between land and water. In close collaboration with scientists, engineers and policymakers, she questions binary worldviews of geographical space by making room for the voices of non-human entities.

Her work positions itself within the formal art context through installations, maps, audio walks and videos, but also manifests itself primarily in contexts beyond, such as cartographic archives, public spaces, scientific conferences and universities.

In 2023, Maud completed a residency at the post-academic institute Jan van Eyck in Maastricht (NL). Her work has been exhibited internationally at TENT, Rotterdam (NL), the United Nations Water Conference 2023 in New York (USA), EIGHT/ΤΟ ΟΧΤΩ in Athens (GR), Buitenplaats Kasteel Wijlre (NL), Temporary Gallery (DE), IJsselbiënnale (NL), Into Nature (NL), and the Special Collections Department of the Utrecht University Library (NL).

During the summer period, Maud will work with an ecologist to map the different plant species growing on the 49m². While cartography has historically served as a territorial tool in Western society, she now employs it as a means to give voice to our fellow entities. In doing so, Maud hopes to facilitate a transfer of knowledge that contributes to the awareness of the artists who will engage with the 49m² in the years to come.
